Minutes of the Recreation Committee Meeting held on June 16th, at
7 pm in Council Chambers be approved.

REPORT:
ACCEPTED AS PRESENTED
Tammie was please to announce that Al Swartz from “Bassing
for Kids” has donated $1000 towards the Camp for children
with special needs.
PARKS
AND FACILITIES REPORT:
ACCEPTED AS PRESENTED
Rick
has spoken to the Haileybury Arena users and they are very interested
in starting a Arena Board Ad fund. The users will be sending a letter
to Council for approval.
The
Communities in Bloom group are meeting on Thursdays at Chartrands.
Rick will be attending these meetings.
Brian
asked if policies could be put into place concerning the rates for
resident and non-resident equipment rentals. Mike also suggested
that tent rentals increase to $125, with the extra $25 going to
a recovery fund. The tents are approximately $3000 to replace. Brian
has brought this up with Council and will report back when a decision
has been made.
TOURISM
AND SPECIAL EVENTS REPORT:
ACCEPTED AS PRESENTED
Paul Gosselin expressed his gratitude to the staff and many volunteers
that helped with the Summerfest/Biker Reunion. Everyone that he
spoke to complimented about how well everything was organized. Many
local people also complimented all aspect of the weekend. He also
reminded everyone that volunteers will be needed for the Haileybury
Centennial and everyone is urged to lend a few hours towards this
celebration.
Tammie
commented that the turn out for the Saturday night dance was indicative
of the entertainment. Recording Artists – although more expensive
to bring in attract a bigger crowd. Police Officers that helped
with security reported that there were very few problems at the
dance.
ADMINISTRATION
REPORT:
ACCEPTED AS PRESENTED
Mr. Ken Zurby (City’s new CAO) was introduced to the staff
at the Waterfront Pool/Fitness Centre and is making his rounds throughout
the City. He brings to the table many years of experience. Tammie
will invite Mr.Zurby to attend a regular meeting of the Recreation
Committee.

NEW
BUSINESS
1. Operational Review of Waterfront Pool/Fitness Centre
A review was presented to the Committee concerning the hours of
Operation at the Waterfront Pool/Fitness Centre. The recommendation
is to close the Centre at 8:00 pm instead of 10:00 pm on Friday
and Saturdays, and that the Centre remain open later for special
events was agreed upon and will be brought to Council for approval.
The number of users at the facility over the year 2003 were less
than 150 which does not warrant the expense of keeping the Facility
open.
2. Letter from CJTT: Re: Rental of equipment for Haileybury Centennial
CJTT expressed interest in a reciprocal agreement for equipment
rentals. The Committee has agreed to rent the equipment.
3. Letter from CJTT : Re: Damager to BN dish
CJTT reported damages to their BN dish by one of the City’s
lawn tractors. The resulting damage caused a four-hour loss of national
news coverage for area residents. CJTT would like the City to put
a fence around this area to prevent this from happening again. The
Committee asked Rick to look into the size and price of a fence
to surround this area.
4. Community Action Awards
Referred to the Director of Leisure Services.

BUSINESS
Mike asked if the handles could be replaced on the 60 and 80 pound
dumbbells. He also asked if a dehumidifier could be put in the iron
room to help control the rust on some of the equipment.
The
lights at the Haileybury Baseball Field #1 were reported to not
be working. Rick will be checking into this.
Gaetan
asked if he could have a few people to help out for the Dymond Fun
Run on Saturday July 24th. James will be sure to advertise the fun
run on the Recreation Report. Tammie will provide Gaetan with a
purchase order to purchase supplies.
Paul
Gignac has found a portable de-fibrillator for the Waterfront Pool/Fitness
Centre at a cost of $1800. Paul will send Tammie the information
for follow up.
Gaetan
informed the Committee that on August 8th – Dymond Youth Baseball
will be hosting their annual tournament. He asked that he have 2
students on hand for the weekend to help line the fields and for
clean up. Gaetan also asked for Rick to put up the Home Run fence.
James
reported that he will be running a Dymond Fun Day on August 20th.
This will be a small family oriented celebration with children’s
games, and local entertainment.
James
asked if Rick could supply more garbage cans at the soccer fields.
Johanne
reported that Zenobie Loach has returned from and International
Hockey School in Finland. She was the only official from North America
to attend.
Tammie
reported that Judy Gareh from Team Avalon has won the Women’s
Grand Master All Ontario’s Body Building, and is now moving
on to the National’s in Edmonton.
Tammie
will be checking with into the responsibility of care for the trees
in Haileybury.
