RISK WATCH PROGRAM

In Canada, the leading cause of death and disability for children is preventable injuries. More children die annually from injuries than from all other childhood diseases combined.

The majority of these injuries are predictable and preventable. By teaching children how to make safe choices when faced with risk, the number of childhood injuries can be reduced significantly.

Risk Watch is an injury prevention program that aims to do just that. Addressing the eight leading causes of childhood injury, Risk Watch consists of activities and lesson ideas school teachers can incorporate into their daily school lessons to teach children how to make safe decisions and prevent injuries.

The Temiskaming Shores Fire Department is a member of RISK WATCH TEMISKAMING Association. The objectives of the Association include:

The objectives of the Association are:

  • To promote and further the development of programs that will reduce predictable, preventable childhood injuries;
  • To promote educational programs for the benefit of the membership;
  • To provide educators with the resources required to equip children with the skills and knowledge necessary to recognize and avoid risk;
  • To attract organizations that have a specific mission to prevent childhood injuries;
  • To participate in community events to raise public awareness of the impact of unintentional injuries and the effectiveness of RISK WATCH as a solution, and;
  • To identify and attract community partners to provide financial, material and human resources to sustain the RISK WATCH initiate.

TAPP-C PROGRAM

The TAPP-C program is a program that brings together fire service and counseling professionals to help families deal effectively with children and teems involved in fire-play.

The fire service professionals educate children and their families about fire and how to develop good fire safety practices. Counseling professionals assess the risk of continued fire involvement and help children and their families deal with problems that may contribute to the fire setting. TAPP-C is free-of-charge and is available to children from 2 - 17 years of age.

The Temiskaming Shores Fire Service continues to recognize the importance of this life saving program. Our goal is to ensure our citizens are able to obtain the help they may need when dealing with problems related to fire setting. For more information contact:

Sparky's Hazard House

The Temiskaming Shores Fire Department's fire prevention program operates on the basic premise that education is the key to saving lives and property from fire. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". In addition to public education being a legislative requirement under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, and with the understanding that prevention is key to reducing fire losses, the Hazard House Simulator will assist staff to enhance the fire prevention program by educating the public and creating awareness about fire hazards. By doing so, it will help reduce actual fires and casualties. The following represents the key benefits to using the hazard house:

  • Communication Impact - The Hazard House has all the components necessary to generate the maximum impact on all age groups. The simulator's special effects and interactivity will improve opportunities to get the audience's attention and keep it while the learning and interactivity takes place.
  • Results in Changing People's Behaviour - The visual effects and the many captivating interactive prompts of the Hazard House simulator will assist in changing people's behaviour in all age groups to prevent fires or even loss of life.
  • The Hazard House simulator is also designed to support the Fire Department's RISK WATCH program and its stimulating approach will help fire department educators interact with audiences in identifying common fire hazards.

Staff is very pleased to inform Council that two of our local insurance providers have confirmed their financial support towards the Hazard House:

  • Tench MacDiarmid Insurance Brokers have offered to partner with the Fire Department by providing financial support of this program by contributing $1,000 annually to the Hazard House Program.
  • SurNet Insurance Group Inc. has also offered to partner with the Fire Department by providing financial support towards the program by contributing $250 each year for the next five years.
