Applying for a permit
You can apply in person for your building permit at City Hall. The office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
You can help speed the process by printing and completing an the relevant application form prior to visiting City Hall. Building Department forms can be found at www.temiskamingshores.ca/en/municipalservices/FeesAndForms.asp
To obtain a paper copy of the required form(s) please visit the front service counter at City Hall. Call us at 705-672-3363 if you would like to have one mailed to you.
Completed application forms should be brought to the planning and development services department counter accompanied by the following:
Note: incomplete applications or plans will not be accepted.
Upon submission of your application at the planning and development services department counter, department staff will review your application to ensure that your application includes all of the required documents.
What Happens Once the Application is Submitted?
Step 1 - A review process is initiated
Permit applications are processed as quickly as possible dependent upon the nature of the work requested. Our building officials will determine if your project is in compliance with the building code, zoning and other municipal by-laws and provincial regulations through the following reviews
Step 2 - Zoning plans examination
Drawings are reviewed to ensure your project will conform to the zoning by-law. Zoning requirements specify the uses permitted within a particular area and contain regulations governing such things as building setbacks, height and lot coverage. You should contact a planning and development services department staff 705-672-3363 to determine the specific requirements for your building addition or alteration. Staff will require your street address, lot number and registered plan number to establish the zoning requirements. This information can be found by checking your tax bill.
Step 3 - Architectural/structural plans examination
Drawings are reviewed to ensure compliance with structural and life safety requirements of the Ontario building code.
Step 4 - Mechanical plans examination
Drawings are reviewed to ensure compliance with heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, drainage and private sewage system requirements of the Ontario building code.
Step 5 - Receive results of the review process
If compliance with the building code, zoning and other applicable regulations is determined, the application is approved and a permit is issued. If compliance is a problem, you will be contacted by planning and development services department staff to assist in meeting requirements. When the review of your application is complete and all requirements have been met, you will be notified that your permit is ready and can be picked up. Let us know if you prefer it be mailed and we can mail it to the address indicated on the application form.
Provincial legislation prescribes that residential permit applications be issued within 10 business days following the day a complete permit application is accepted by the planning and development services department .
If during the review staff identifies deficiencies on the drawings or requires additional information, the designer and/or applicant will be notified, and the 10 day time-frame will no longer be applicable. Please ensure that the necessary information is submitted promptly, as subject to the type of deficiency, no further processing may occur until the information is received.
Note: once you receive your building permit, ensure that both the permit and approved drawings are available on the construction site. Your permit will provide information regarding mandatory inspections required.
