The City currently provides a depot style recycling program in accordance to legislative requirements in association with the Cochrane-Temiskaming Waste Management Board (CTWMB) for the residential sector.
The CTWMB is an independent entity with a Southern and a Northern Node comprised of sixteen (16) municipalities. The Southern Node is administered by the City of Temiskaming Shores while the Northern Node is administered by the Town of Kapuskaing.
Acceptable MaterialsThis program is restricted to the collection of #1 Pete Plastics, glass, aluminium, steel food and beverage containers (Fe), Old Corrugated Cardboard (OCC) as well as mixed residential paper (ONP). ONP would include such items cereal boxes, tissue boxes, soap and shoe boxes.
Employees of the CTWMB Southern Node pick up recyclables at various depots (blue bins) located in fifteen (15) area municipalities. The Southern Node collection area is from Temagami to Charlton. Collected material is delivered to the CTWMB Municipal Reycling Facility (MRF) located in Temiskaming Shore (New Liskeard) where it is sorted, baled and eventually shipped to market. Each participating municipality is responsible for the depots (blue bins) within their boundaries.

The current pick up schedule which was derived from past collection trends are required as follows:
In order for this City's Public Works Department and the CTWMB staff to perform efficiently, we must perform our mandate in an organized and sequential manner. Every work function performed by Public Works/ CTWMB is subject to a planned and engineered work schedule. To negate the planned work schedule results in wasted resources and additional expenditures and in turn increased costs to the taxpayer. Both parties shall endeavour to complete mandated services in a timely and sequential manner in order to emphasize practicality and efficiency in our everyday work schedule. Having said that however, this can only be accomplished with the cooperation and consideration demonstrated by residents. The City recognizes that at times the depots are full; the City also recognizes the effort and subsequently the frustration of residents upon such occasions. However it must be noted that on such occasions, realistically the bins are over capacitated with household refuse, foreign material, non recyclable or non conforming materials. In order for the program to remain viable and productive the City request that residents abide by the following practices:
The City would like to remind residents that to simply abandon materials beside, on or around the bins or to leave "unbroken" boxes on site for pick up or to introduce non recyclable material is not only illegal and enforceable by bylaw but is contradictory and detrimental to the efforts of many. This type of activity simply results in wasted resources and additional expenditures and in turn increased costs to the taxpayer. The City of Temiskaming Shores thanks you for your understanding and cooperation in this endeavour.
The City is currently in the process of investigating the potential to provide a curbside recycling program and has retained the services of Stantec Consulting to prepare a Business Case for the implementation of a curbside recycling program. The direction that the municipality will be taking should be determined in mid 2010.
