Carbon Monoxide Can Be Deadly

Carbon Monoxide Can Be Deadly

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas that can cause serious illness or death. Over 65% of all carbon monoxide deaths and injuries in Ontario occur in homes.

Where Is the Risk?

Many homes have several fuel-burning appliances that can produce carbon monoxide if they are not properly installed, ventilated, or maintained.

  • CO is invisible — you cannot see, smell, or taste it.
  • Exposure can happen quickly or build up over time.

Common Sources of Carbon Monoxide

  • Furnace
  • Gas or wood fireplace
  • Gas stove or oven
  • Gas water heater
  • Gas dryer
  • Portable fuel-fired generators
  • Portable fuel heaters
  • Vehicles or equipment running in attached garages

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Symptoms can appear suddenly or gradually and may be mistaken for the flu:

  • Headache and dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weakness, confusion, or collapse
  • Loss of consciousness

If these symptoms occur and your CO alarm is sounding, get outside immediately and call 9-1-1.

How to Keep Your Household Safe

  • Install certified carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas and on every level of your home.
  • Test CO alarms regularly and replace batteries as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Have all fuel-burning appliances and vents inspected and serviced annually by a qualified technician.
  • Never use a barbecue, generator, or fuel-burning appliance indoors or in an attached garage.
  • Do not leave vehicles idling in attached garages, even with the garage door open.
