Province Announces $4.9 Million Investment in Transit for Temiskaming Shores

TEMISKAMING SHORES, ON — October 6, 2026

The City of Temiskaming Shores is pleased to announce a $4,922,243 investment through the Ontario Transit Investment Fund to support the next generation of transit and transportation services in Temiskaming Shores and the surrounding region.

The investment provides an important opportunity for the City and its regional partners to respond to what residents have identified as priorities for the future of transit.

Through the Temiskaming Transit Service Review, along with extensive consultation and community feedback, residents and transit users told the City they want transit that is more frequent, easier to understand, more flexible, more responsive and better connected to communities throughout the region.

With support from the Ontario Transit Investment Fund, the City now has an opportunity to act on that feedback.

Building the Next Generation of Transit

Over the coming months, the City and its partners will begin building the next generation of transit and transportation services for Temiskaming Shores and the surrounding area. This work will include:

  • Improved transit service frequency;
  • New regional intercommunity connections;
  • Modern on-demand transit technology;
  • Updated transit maps and rider information;
  • Clearer communication about transit routes, schedules and availability;
  • Additional payment options;
  • Expanded pass options; and
  • Improved transfer opportunities between services.

The provincial investment will also support a new intercommunity transit service connecting communities across South Temiskaming, while strengthening connections with existing Ontario Northland bus services and exploring how local and regional transit can connect with the future Northlander passenger rail service.

“This investment represents an important opportunity to strengthen transit in Temiskaming Shores and across South Temiskaming. Improving transportation options and regional connections can help residents access employment, health care, education, services and other important destinations. We are pleased to see this investment in our community and look forward to working with our regional partners to move this initiative forward.”

— Mayor Laferriere

A More Connected Regional Transit System

The goal is simple: to create a transit system that is more functional for local travel while better connecting our region — north, south, east and west.

The work ahead will involve detailed planning with regional and strategic partners to determine service routes, schedules, technology and other operational details.

Keeping Residents Informed

The City recognizes that changes to transit are important to residents and will ensure information is communicated clearly and well in advance. As service details are finalized, residents will receive information regarding new services, routes, schedules, payment options and other changes.

This is just the beginning of the work.

The City looks forward to working with its regional and strategic partners to build a more connected, accessible and responsive transit system for Temiskaming Shores and the surrounding communities.
