Cemetery Clean-up

As the warmer weather approaches, City staff at the Mount Pleasant, Pioneer and Valleyview Cemeteries, will be conducting a Spring Clean-up, in accordance with By-law No. 2012-155, to ensure that our cemeteries remains a respectful and well-maintained space for visitors.

During this time, any unauthorized items will be removed to facilitate grounds maintenance. Families are encouraged to retrieve any personal items they wish to keep before Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Following this date, our staff will need to remove these items. We will store large items for 60 days if you wish to retrieve them.

As part of the seasonal maintenance, the following items will be subject to removal:

  • Decorations that have become withered or unsightly: Including flowers, potted plants, wreaths, and baskets that are no longer in suitable condition.
  • Artificial flowers: Permitted from May through September only. Exception: Artificial wreaths may remain year-round if securely attached to a monument or mounted on a stand at least 30 inches high and firmly anchored in the ground.
  • Prohibited materials: Glass, pottery, and other breakable items, which pose safety risks, are not allowed at any time.
  • Damaged or hazardous items: Including broken or faded decorations and solar lights.
  • Overgrown vegetation: Trees or shrubs that encroach on adjacent plots, walkways, or roads, or otherwise detract from the appearance of the grounds.

In addition, non-permitted structures such as borders (fences, railings, walls) and unapproved stone coping may also be removed during this process.

Please note that the City reserves the right to determine whether any item is unsightly, damaged, or otherwise unauthorized in accordance with cemetery regulations. The City is not responsible for items left on, or removed from, any lot or plot.

These guidelines help ensure the cemetery remains a peaceful, clean, and safe place for everyone.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
