 Who Can Vote
 

A person is entitled to be an elector at an election held in a local municipality if, on Voting Day (Monday, October 24, 2022), he or she:

  • Is a Canadian citizen,
  • Is at least 18 years old,
  • Resides in the local municipality, or is the owner or tenant of land in the local municipality, or the spouse of such owner or tenant; and
  • Is not prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, as amended (MEA), or otherwise by law.  

 

You may only vote once in the City of Temiskaming Shores election regardless of how many properties you own / rent within the City.

 

Your name must be on the voters’ list to cast a ballot.  To ensure you are on the voters’ list for the 2022 municipal and school board elections, please visit voterlookup.ca, or call 1-866-296-6722 to confirm or update your information. 

 

From September 1, you must apply to your municipal clerk if you want to add or remove your name to the voters’ list, or to amend your information. You have until the close of voting on October 24 to apply for any changes. If you are applying to add your name to the voters’ list, you will be asked to provide proof that you are eligible to vote.

 Who Can't Vote
 

You are prohibited from voting, on voting day if you are:

  • serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution
  • a corporation
  • owner or tenant (or spouse of an owner or tenant) of a commercial property
  • acting as executor or trustee, or in another representative capacity, except as a voting proxy
  • convicted of a corrupt practice described in section 90(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, as amended
 Information for Students
 

If you are a student and consider your “home” to be the place where you live when you are not attending school (i.e. you plan on returning there), then you are eligible to vote in both your “home” municipality and in the municipality where you currently live while attending school.

 

If you're attending school in another Town/City, please check with the Clerk of that municipality to find out what your voting options are.

Electors can vote anytime from 9:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14th, 2022 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 24th, 2022 using internet or telephone voting methods.

 How do I Vote:
 

The 2022 Municipal Election will be conducted using internet/ telephone voting and paper ballots.

 

For online and telephone voting, eligible Voters will receive a Voters Information Letter in the mail by the first week of October.  Online and telephone voting will be available 24/7 starting Friday, October 14, 2022 at 9:00 am until Monday, October 24, 2022 at 8:00 pm.

 Identification Requirements
 

The following are examples of the proof of identity and residence that a person may present for the purpose of voting.  Electors who cannot present an acceptable proof of identity may make a statutory declaration by filling out a Declaration of Identify – Form 9:

 

  • An Ontario driver’s licence
  • An Ontario Health Card (photo card)
  • An Ontario Photo Card
  • An Ontario motor vehicle permit (vehicle portion)
  • A cancelled personalized cheque
  • A mortgage statement, lease or rental agreement relating to property in Ontario
  • An insurance policy or insurance statement
  • An income tax assessment notice
  • A property tax assessment
  • A credit card statement, bank account statement, or RRSP, RRIF, RHOSP or T5 statement
  • A utility bill for hydro, water, gas, telephone or cable TV or a bill from a public utilities commission
  • A cheque stub, T4 statement or pay receipt issued by an employer

School Board Election Information 

 

There will be no School Board Election in 2022.

 

All School Board Trustee seats for the applicable zones for the City of Temiskaming Shores have been acclaimed for the 2022 Election.

 

 

To vote in a school board election for a trustee, you must be:

  • a Canadian citizen
  • aged 18 or older
  • qualify to vote for that particular school board

 

If you are a resident elector in a municipality, you are eligible to vote for a school trustee that represents the municipality where you live. 

 

There are 4 different kinds of school boards in Ontario:

 

  • English-language public school board: By default, your property taxes support your municipality's English public school board, unless you are qualified to vote for a separate or French public board.

 

  • English-language separate school board: You must be Roman Catholic, and you or your spouse must be an English-language separate school board supporter.

 

 

 

You will find information about which school board your property taxes support on your Tax Bill issued by the City, or on your Property Assessment Notice issued by MPAC.

 Who Can Run for Municipal Council
 

To run for a position on Council you must be eligible to vote in the City of Temiskaming Shores.  On the day you file your nomination, you must be a Canadian citizen aged 18 or older, qualify as a resident or non-resident elector.

 Who is Not Eligible
 

The following people are disqualified from being elected to municipal office:

  • any person who is not eligible to vote in the municipality
  • an employee of a municipality unless he or she:
    • takes an unpaid leave of absence before being nominated, and
    • resigns, if elected to the office
  • a judge of any court
  • an MP, an MPP or a senator
  • an inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution
  • a person who by reason of any violations of the election campaign financial requirements or violations for not filling the financial statements pursuant to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.
 Nominations
 

If a person wishes to run as a candidate in the City of Temiskaming Shores municipal election, they must file a nomination paper with the Municipal Clerk. Candidates will also need 25 signatures from eligible electors (excluding school board trustee candidates) with their nomination, on the prescribed forms.

 

Between May 2, 2022 to August 18, 2022, nomination papers may be filed in-person or by an agent (no fax or email), BY APPOINTMENT ONLY with the Municipal Clerk (or designate), during regular municipal office hours being 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding Statutory holidays.

 

On Nomination Day (August 19, 2022), nomination papers can be filed BY APPOINTMENT ONLY with the Municipal Clerk (or designate) between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 pm.

 

The required filing fee is $200.00 for the Head of Council, and $100.00 for all other offices. Payments may be made in cash, debit/credit, cheque or money order made payable to the City of Temiskaming Shores, and must accompany the signed forms and other filing requirements.

 

Under the Municipal Elections Act, candidates cannot spend money, including their own money, on their campaign before the Clerk receives their nomination form.

 Third Party Advertisers
 

The Municipal Elections Act, 1996  includes rules for third party advertising.

 

  • third party advertisement is an advertisement in any broadcast, print, electronic or other medium that has the purpose of promoting, supporting or opposing a candidate in the election, OR a “yes” or “no” answer to a question on the ballot.

 

  • Individuals, corporations and trade unions who wish to conduct third party advertising in a City of Temiskaming Shores election must be registered with the Municipal Clerk.
