Ribbon Cutting at Northern College Library

On March 1, 2022, the deposit library collection at the Northern College Haileybury Campus Library location opened to the public. This satellite service is available to Temiskaming Shores Public Library cardholders, and to students, staff and faculty members of Northern College.

Northern College libraryThe partnership came about when the Temiskaming Shores Public Library made the difficult decision to amalgamate and close both former branches of the library to help fund the renovation and move into a newly renovated, fully accessible location at 285 Whitewood Ave. West in Temiskaming Shores. The Library Board had been working with the City of Temiskaming Shores Council over the course of eight years to address the structural, space and accessibility shortcomings of the two former library facilities. Public consultations about library service had been held, and the issue of amalgamating the service was discussed at an open council meeting. Although the library’s spacious new site is conveniently located on a bus route and in a popular shopping spot in Temiskaming Shores, the Library Board was very reluctant to completely remove library services from the southern part of the municipality. They, along with the City of Temiskaming Shores, forged the partnership with Northern College to house a deposit collection of public library materials and several public access computers to ensure the continuation of a library service in that part of the municipality. The service is manned by college library staff members, with the input and help of public library staff. The partnership was set to begin simultaneously with the move to the new location on Whitewood Avenue in the spring of 2020, however the pandemic delayed both events. After a few false starts, the Library Board and staff are thrilled that the satellite partnership is up and running in the newly renovated Northern College Campus Library.

On site at Northern College, library users will find a collection of around 4000 items, including Fiction, Nonfiction, French Fiction, Young Adult, Junior, Picture Book and DVD titles. There are two public access computers available for use, and the space is very inviting for quiet study. Library items will be transported between the locations as they had been with the previous library branches, so items can be picked up and returned to either site. Public library users may also borrow college library items through the reciprocal borrowing agreement between the college and the public library, and college students, faculty and staff have the same benefits.

For the time being, users can enter through the West entrance and must show proof of vaccination as per the College’s requirements.
